Design and Development

The idea for Chickbox came from my weekly frustration in cleaning the homemade Wooden Nest Boxes used by our Rhode Island Red Layers, it was a messy weekly job that I didn’t look forward to, on top of which we had the worry of managing Red Mite.

I found galvanized Metal Nest Boxes were available, but on closer inspection users of these had observed that they rotted as the Chicken excrement “acids” attacked the galvanized surface, and they never provided the easy access cleaning we were looking for.

Then the light bulb moment happened and I realised a properly designed Polymer Nest Box could provide lots of benefits, save time and help us manage the flocks health.

We assembled our Design Team and Polymer Engineers and set about producing the design you see today using the latest 3D modelling packages. The true test came for the hens when we fitted the first nest boxes and I was proud when a hen immediately entered the Chickbox and produced an egg. The hens love them and our husbandry costs in time and money have reduced.
